The 12 Principles of Animation
1. Squash & Stretch
Gives objects weight and flexibility. When a ball bounces, it squashes upon impact and stretches as it moves.
2. Timing & Spacing
The speed and rhythm of movement. More frames create slower, smoother motion; fewer frames give quick, snappy action.
3. Anticipation
Preparing the audience for upcoming action. A character squats before jumping or winds up before throwing.
4. Follow Through & Overlapping Action
Parts of the body continue moving after the character stops. Different elements move at different rates.
