SECTION 3 – SUMMARY OF THE FILES

1) public/manifest.json  
   • A basic manifest to enable install functionality for the PWA on mobile devices.  
   • Contains app name, icons (if any), theme color, and other metadata for the PWA.

2) src/App.js  
   • The root component of the React app.

# Voice 2 Clip

## Project Overview
Voice 2 Clip is a simple, mobile-first Progressive Web App (PWA) that allows you to record your voice, send the audio to OpenAI’s Whisper API for transcription, and then copy the transcribed text to your clipboard. The original design goals included:  
- A minimal, single-page style interface for quick voice note taking.  
- A big red record/stop button that changes color and throbs while recording.  
- A text field to display the transcription.  
- A “Copy to Clipboard” button to easily copy the transcription.  
- A mobile-friendly gradient background (very light purple to very light pink).  
- An optional PWA setup with manifest.json (even though offline usage is limited by the Whisper API requirement).

The app was refined with three main pages: home (Page1), transcribe (Page2), and a “How to Use” instructions page (Page3). It is built with React, using React Router for navigation.

## Features & Pages
1. **Home Page (Page1)**  
   - Displays a simple logo, the app title, and an introduction.  
   - Provides a button linking to the transcribe functionality.

2. **Transcribe Page (Page2)**  
   - Hosts the core record/stop feature (Component1).  
   - Displays the transcription text in a read-only text area (Component2).  
   - Offers a “Copy to Clipboard” button (Component3).

3. **How to Use (Page3)**  
   - Provides step-by-step usage instructions.  
   - Returns the user to the home page with a navigation link.

4. **Components**  
   - **Component1** (Record/Stop Button): Handles recording via the browser’s MediaRecorder API and sends the audio to Whisper for transcription.  
   - **Component2** (Transcription Text Display): Shows the returned transcript from the Whisper API.  
   - **Component3** (Copy to Clipboard): Copies the displayed transcript text to the user’s clipboard.

5. **API Integration**  
   - **OpenAI Whisper API**: The audio recorded by Component1 is passed to the Whisper API endpoint for transcription. The code for this is found in “api.js”.  
   - No Firebase usage is included in this project.

## Prerequisites & Installation
1. Ensure you have [Node.js](https://nodejs.org) (v14 or above) and [npm](https://www.npmjs.com/) installed.  
2. Clone or download this repository.  
3. Navigate into the project folder and install dependencies:

npm install
```

4. Set up your environment variables (see “Environment Variables” below).

## Running the App
To start the development server locally:

```
npm start
```

Then open your browser at:
```
http://localhost:3000/
```
Here you can navigate through the pages: Home, Transcribe, and How to Use.

## Deployment Notes
For a production build, run:
```
npm run build
```
This will generate an optimized build in the “build/” folder. You can deploy it to any static hosting service (e.g., Netlify, Vercel, GitHub Pages).

If you plan to use PWA features, ensure your “manifest.json” and service worker configuration are properly referenced. By default, Create React App includes a service worker setup that can be enabled for offline caching, but the Whisper API calls still require network access.

## Environment Variables
This project expects an environment variable for accessing the OpenAI Whisper API:  
- `REACT_APP_OPENAI_API_KEY` – Your OpenAI API Key.

Create a `.env` file in the project root and add your key:
```
REACT_APP_OPENAI_API_KEY=your_openai_api_key_here
```
(When you run `npm start`, Create React App automatically loads environment variables from `.env` files.)

## Firebase Config
This project does not use Firebase; no Firebase configuration or credentials are required.

## APIs
Voice 2 Clip uses the OpenAI Whisper API as defined in `api.js`. The `transcribeAudio` function sends audio data to Whisper’s transcription endpoint and returns the resulting text. Make sure you have a valid API key for OpenAI in your `.env` file before attempting transcription.
